An Inspector Calls!

Tigers and Zebras had another visit from people who help us. This time it was the turn of the Police who came to visit. They brought their van and lots of clothes for us to try on. They even put their siren on- it was very loud!

We took them back to the classroom and asked them lots of questions that we had been busy thinking up:

  • do you have a police aeroplane?
  • do you work at night or day?
  • do you catch baddies?
  • do you play football?
  • do you have a hat?
  • do you work in an office?
Can you remember the answers to these questions?

Hamsters & Rabbits

We had a visit from Scott who works at 'Pets At Home'. He came in to answer questions about how to look after animals. He brought in two hamsters, Fluffy and Marshmallow! We asked him a lot of questions.

O

Then on Monday, Mr Caldwell brought in his two rabbits, Floppy and Sapphire. We learned what they need in their cage and we made sure they had a little place to run around in our new role-play pet shop. The children love the rabbits and have been taking it in turns to stroke them and look after them.

The children in Tiger and Zebra Classes had a visit from our Lollipop Lady, Miss Halima!

We are starting our topic on 'People Who Help Us' and the Lollipop Lady is our first of many visitors we have planned for this term.

We asked her some questions:

Question: Do you have a car? Answer: No, I like to walk.
Question: Do you have children? Answer: Yes, a boy and a girl.
Question: Do you do other things? Answer: Yes, I am also a dinner lady.
Question: Where are your mum and Dad? Answer: They are in Somalia.
Question: How do you stop cars? Answer: I have to show them my STOP sign and then wait until it is safe.

Good Curious Cat questions, guys!

We're going on a bear hunt!

As part of 'Book Week' we have been reading the story We're going on a bear hunt. The children have really enjoyed the story and we shared it to the rest of the school during assembly today and to the parents at the end of school. Thank you to all who attended.

At the beginning of the week our Year 6 readers told us that they had seen a big bear wandering around school. So on 'Forestry Friday' we decided that we would make a trap to capture it. The children made a long list of all the resources we would need to make a trap and then worked together to collect all the items. We then helped each other to build the trap and put carrots and apples inside for the bear to eat.

When we arrived back at lunch the Year 4 and 5 helpers said they had seen the bear in our outdoor area near the bonfire. We decided to go on a 'bear hunt'. As we got closer to our trap we could see something moving inside. Then all of a sudden a huge bear appeared and roared very loudly! We were so scared we ran way!!!

But we quickly realised the bear was Jason!!

Learning letters!

Thank you to all the parents who attended our parent morning on Monday, we hope it was useful. If you have any further questions please speak to either Mr Caldwell or Miss Pearce.

The children have settled into full time schooling very well and are really enjoying learning, playing and interacting with their friends. They have been very busy over the last two weeks learning their sounds, practicing writing their names and beginning handwriting.

Just to clarify we will be following the Letters and Sounds phonic programme and will be teaching each sound along side a Jolly Phonic action. We have covered 8 sounds over the last two weeks and the children have picked each sound up very easily. Please keep practicing at home!

The children have also been taught the first four parts of The Casey Caterpillar story to help develop their handwriting skills. We will send out copies so the children can practice each night. Please ensure your child has the correct 'pencil grip' when holding their pencil.

Lastly thank you to all those parents who have been sending their child to school with their bookbag everyday. It is highly important that the children get into a routine of bringing these everyday so when they are reading levelled books they can take new ones home each night as this will aid their reading progression. A little reminder, please ensure your child looks after any books they take home, ripped or damaged books are not a good example to be showing the children and a charge will be sent home for a replacement.

Forestry Friday

Every Friday Reception class try to spend as much time outside as possible. We have a wonderful environment for learning outside and we make the most of it! Children will be developing their social and language skills, as well as learning about nature and spending time with nature in our increasingly urban world.

Today they made dens, played hide and seek, caught monsters, made kites, ate lots of apples and pears, rolled down our hill, read stories on the grass, made mushroom tents with the parachute, played cowboys amongst other things. They were very, very busy...

Today was the first time we lit a fire and we taught them the rules for being safe. They knew to make sure and stay outside the circle unless invited in by an adult. In the coming weeks we will be using the fire to boil water for hot chocolate and toast marshmallows. Please be aware that they will come home smelling of woodsmoke on a friday!

First Full Week!

Tigers and Zebras have now finished their first full week and have done very well settling into their new environment! One of the big changes has been having lunch in the dining hall, which the children have really enjoyed as you can see from the pictures below.

Mr Caldwell and Miss Pearce have been spending lunch with the children, both in the dining hall and after they go outside to play. Next week we will be checking in on them, but will be starting to give them their independence  a little more too!

Packed lunches should have a balance of food and should include fresh fruit and vegetables.

The school meal menu is available from the school office and Eden food services have a website: http://www.edenfoodservice.co.uk/
